NorthStar VETS – Satellite Office | Brick, NJ
MISSION STATEMENT
NorthStar VETS exists for one fundamental purpose: to improve the quality of life for our patients, clients, the family veterinarian and our staff.
CORE VALUES
We adhere to a core set of values that guide every aspect of what we do and how we do it— that translates into our “C-Pets” philosophy:
C – COMPASSION: We will interact with our clients, patients, and community with kindness and empathy.
P – PROFESSIONALISM: We will conduct ourselves in a moral and responsible manner and treat our clients, patients, and colleagues with respect and integrity.
E – EXCELLENCE: We will provide the highest-quality care and state-of-the-art knowledge in the practice of veterinary medicine.
T – TEAMWORK: The staff at NorthStar VETS, along with clients and their family veterinarians will work as a cohesive unit by recognizing the equal contributions and value of every team member.
S – SERVICE: We are dedicated to exceeding our clients’ expectations through timely and effective communication, exemplary customer service, outstanding patient care, and promoting a learning environment.
CULTURE
Each one of us walks the walk when it comes to translating our shared purpose into the way we do our jobs. From how people are greeted at the front desk, to how we soothe a frightened pet, to how we use today’s most advanced treatments and techniques to keep pets healthy — we strive at all times to deliver the highest levels of care and compassion. We truly understand the immeasurable value that pets bring to peoples’ lives and they deserve our best.
We followed “green” building practices when we built our facility out of respect for the land, our environment, and our community. And we designed the hospital to be a welcoming and calming place for sick or injured pets and their worried parents. We formalized a set of core values that guide our day-to-day activities, and are the touchstone for everything we do, from choosing the people we hire to the charities we support. We carefully designed our practice to support the primary care veterinarian, so they can thrive as partners in our shared mission to care for pets. We sponsor and/or participate in over two dozen community events each year including hosting a human and pet blood drive. Most importantly, we nurture our staff, ensuring they have the physical, emotional, and technological support they need to do their jobs at the highest possible level.
NorthStar VETS is an award-winning veterinary specialty and emergency hospital committed to being the best in one of the nation’s busiest parts of the country. With so many pets in the area, our team is always growing.
Because NorthStar VETS is one of the last privately-held specialty practices in the tri-state area, the culture is different than you’ll find at corporate hospitals. The atmosphere is collaborative, meaning that a doctor here has direct access to many veterinary specialists in over a dozen specialties with whom to consult, and this is encouraged with daily morning cage-side rounds. This team also ranks nationally as one of the best for referring veterinarian satisfaction. You should also know that NorthStar VETS does not offer general medicine and has no interns, which means your immediate colleagues would all be trained veterinary professionals at the top of their game.
Team members at NorthStar VETS enjoy a nice work-life balance, a tuition reimbursement program for veterinarians, money for continuing education, a higher than average support-staff-to-doctor ratio, friendly and helpful coworkers, management who listens, plus great pay and other benefits.

There is a mix of long term and new doctors at the practice. This provides a great environment for growth and mentorship as well as the ability to find colleagues at similar life stages. Most departments have at least one specialist that has been with Pieper for >5 years. This support allows 7-day-a-week coverage for most departments including Critical Care, Neurology, and Internal Medicine.
TECHNICIAN TENURE
Our technical and support staff are a combination of people that have grown within Pieper throughout the years as well as new employees from outside hospitals. This mix, along with cross training and the ability to move between departments, creates a well rounded staff culture and improves integration between departments.
MANAGEMENT TEAM
Our management team has grown most recently as the hospital expanded. As with our other areas, this team is a mix of staff promoted from within along with people from other hospitals and industries. This group has been crucial in improving communication and supporting the doctors and staff as the caseload has continued to grow.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Pieper has always worked closely with our community to help pets and owners. We participate in local fundraisers and events. We also work closely with rescues and shelters in the area to provide assistance and support.
We also have created the Pieper Foundation which provides financial assistance to pet owners who are in need. This support allows our doctors to treat pets in cases where finances may have otherwise been a hurdle.
THE BEST ATTRIBUTES OF LIVING IN THIS AREA
Connecticut is a family friendly state that offers a mix of urban, suburban, and rural environments, perfect for all. The local community has grown recently with new outdoor activities, breweries, and community events.
THE BEST ATTRIBUTES OF THE HOSPITAL AND STAFF
Our hospital is unique in that it is a non-corporate family environment that has grown organically to service the Connecticut community. Our staff are passionate about continuously improving and driving the advancement of veterinary care to pets and their owners. We feel that this success is dependent on each staff member’s individual success and help support everyone in their growth and development at Pieper.
Teaching has always been valued at Pieper. We have an established rotating internship program as well as specialty interns in multiple departments and a neurology resident.
Pieper has also partnered with a local veterinary technician/assistant college to provide clinical experience for their students. We are a RACE approved facility and present continuing education programs for referral veterinarians.

Veterinary Medical Center of Central NY
Syracuse, NY
MISSION STATEMENT
To provide high quality emergency, specialty, and complementary care in an efficient, compassionate, and collaborative manner; to support our clients through the process of treating their sick pets with kindness and understanding; to be an extension of the primary care veterinarian’s role in the treatment process by providing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options; and to give our healthcare team the support that they need to be able to achieve these goals.
CORE VALUES
Our patients’ health and quality of life are our central focus. We work with the pet parent to generate an individualized treatment plan that provides the best outcome for that patient. We honor the pet parents’ goals for their pets, and we respect the primary care veterinarian’s role in the pet’s health management plan.
Employee health and wellbeing is a priority. Finding time to disconnect and re-center ourselves is key to remaining well balanced and effective in our professional roles. Veterinary Medical Center of CNY provides tools necessary to support such balance, and, given that, employees are accountable for the energy they bring to the workplace. We remain dedicated in our efforts to provide a place of employment that empowers employees to create a career path that is professionally fulfilling and financially rewarding. We challenge each and every staff member to perform with excellence, no matter the task.
Our love for pets requires we do our best to help them stay healthy and maintain a good quality of life, both within the home and the community. We are dedicated to serving pet parents as well as other animal welfare agencies within the community. We strive to protect the innocent from harm and to help heal those who have suffered.
For our patients, for our team, and for our community, we show up, we work hard and we remain kind. Every day.
CULTURE
Tenure of doctors: LOW turnover – in the past 10 years: 1 IM doc moved back home to Florida, a Cardiologist changed to independent contracting work due to a 1+ hour commute and personal life needs, 2 retired from ER and transitioned to other non-ER/specialty work. Otherwise no doctor has left in my 10 years with the practice for incompatibility, compensation or cultural reasons.
Tenure of technicians: Most techs have been at the hospital for 10+ years. Four techs have left in past 5 years due to reluctance to shift mindset and join the positive cultural shift or cross-country moves due to spousal relocation.
Tenure of staff: No loss of admin staff during my 10 years, and all but 1 outdates me by 8 years.

Even when faced with challenge, we persevere by offering what we can. Whether it is offering an experimental treatment, simple sound advice, or though the action of diligent work, there is always something that can be done every hour of every day.
– Respect is offered to all:
It is expected that every member of our community demonstrates respect for our clients, our patients, each other, our hospital, and our world. Description of Culture
Tending our culture is what has made us successful as a busy referral center. The candidates we invite into our hospital are carefully selected to ensure their success as part of our family. We foster a diverse culture of fun-loving, light-hearted, professionals who treat each other with respect and are true to their calling. Our dedication to maintaining work-life balance is unlike any other. On-call responsibilities are not expected or required. Management is more apt to send you home than desire you to stay late. Tremendous effort and resources are devoted to maintaining the positive wellbeing of the team and ward off fatigue and burnout. The appointment schedule is developed in collaboration with the doctors to keep caseload at a manageable level. Dedicated time in the appointment schedule is reserved for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The only thing hospital ownership and management asks of the team is to try their very best. Our founding philosophy has always been that if we practice great medicine, great success will follow.

Management Team
As an independently owned hospital, our management style is collaborative and delegative. Co-owned by a veterinarian, hospital management is quick to respond and eager to help. Our successful approach has been recognized by others and we were awarded 2018 Business of the Year and nominated as a top 500 Veterinary Hospital in the country. Micromanagement is not in our toolbox. Each Team member has a department head to call upon. Department heads, the hospital manager and hospital ownership regularly meet to discuss topics brought to them by their teams. In order to help balance work-life, department meetings are held quarterly and staff meetings annually. To promote collaboration and strengthen the team, management holds several off-site, staff-wide, events which are often inclusive of family. Management listens and cares for the team. During the pandemic, we distributed more than $30,000 in assistance to our team and started an on-site PeaPod remote learning classroom for children of our team members. When the team asks for more resources, we are happy to provide them with the tools needed so they can best care for their patients.
Community Outreach
We believe in giving back to our veterinary and local communities though education programs and charitable contributions to non-profit organizations aligned with our values. We are honored to host externships from veterinary schools from all over the country and the world. In partnering with several local veterinary science colleges, we offer internship opportunities to students on a vet-med or vet-tech path. We also collaborate with local and vocational high school guidance counselors to permit carefully selected students exposure to specialized veterinary medicine. As our hospital grows, we want our instruction opportunities to grow with it. We strive to start an emergency-focused internship and a rotating internship program in 2021. Reaching out to our local veterinary community is also very important to us. We organize continuing education lectures annually which are very well-attended by our referring veterinarians. Many of our referring veterinarians are also clients, who whom we offer professional courtesy discounts.
Our community of pet-parents and rescue organizations are always in need of assistance and donations. Over the years we have funded, sponsored, or contributed to the building of the Chelmsford Dog Park, Lowell and Nashua Humane Societies, Operation Delta-Dog, Ahisma Animal Haven, Nashoba Valley Technical High School, Westford Academy, and many others. Rescue organizations, first-responders, and veterans receive discounted care. We also assist individual clients when they are in desperate need. We have offered steep discounts and capped invoices in order to provide a pet with a good prognosis the care it needs when the parent cannot afford care. As a last resort, relinquishment and re-homing a patient is an option we offer to those who are unable to care for their pet any longer.
The BEST attributes of the hospital and staff
Our staff and culture is the best attribute of our hospital. It is an absolute pleasure to work alongside a team of fun, dedicated, hard-working, and intelligent group. The feeling of family and comradery is palpable when interacting with the team. There is very little drama or rumor. Although everyone is entitled to an occasional bad-day, disrespect and negativity is a rare occurrence. In a third-party anonymous survey of the team, the word most used to describe our hospital environment was “FUN”. Our goal was to create a hospital and foster a culture where people want to come to work and be around their teammates. We happy to have succeeded. We feel that the facilities in which everyone works contributes to their happiness. Not only is our equipment kept up-to-date and nice, but the areas in which they are kept are carefully considered. Our hospital is clean, bright, and colorful. Artwork, greenery, and life is found throughout the halls and waiting areas. Thank you cards and gifts sent by clients decorate our workspaces. Our hospital is not cold, blanketed in off-white, nor barren; it is inviting, warm, and friendly.
The BEST attributes of living in the area
Massachusetts is the heart of New England. It does not matter if you are a big city person or a great-outdoors person, there is abundant activities in the region. Westford is located about 20 miles from Boston’s history, sports, museums, theaters, night-life, and fine-dining. Just south of Boston is Cape Cod, a favorite beach weekend getaway destination for Bostonians, celebrities, and US Presidents. The best hiking and skiing in the Northeast is a short drive into New Hampshire. The vacationland of Maine can be reached in less than 2 hours. Some of our team own a boat to enjoy the rivers, lakes, and the ocean which is never far away. Located in the beautiful and safe Nashoba Valley Region, housing and living costs of the Westford area are more affordable than metro-Boston without being removed from all that makes the region great. The hospital is surrounded by affluent communities of upper middle-class professionals. School districts are top-rated and among the best in the country. The majority of the 130+ general practices that refer to us are high-quality, well-equipped facilities, with excellent clients.
